- Metroidvania- You explore a large, interconnected world where most paths are initially impossible to complete until you discover new abilities to overcome these obstacles. The cornerstone of Supraland's design was to make abilities so versatile that they'll surprise you with how many different uses they have. If you combine your abilities, the possibilities become even greater.
- Study- Most of the game is devoted to exploring the sandbox world in search of secrets. Often you'll think you're going to go overboard and beat the level designer, but there's a chest waiting for you with a very useful upgrade.
- Puzzle design- The deeper you get into the game, the more you'll encounter creative puzzles you've never seen before, challenging you to stop and think about what abilities you have and how you can use them in yet another way. The types of puzzles I had already seen in other games were immediately rejected during the design process. And what's important to me is that once you understand the idea of a riddle, you can solve it right away, rather than having to complete a cumbersome, frustrating task.
- Battles- Combat mechanics are inspired by old-fashioned, fast-paced shooter games like Unreal, Doom and Quake, which encourage rapid-fire shooting and jumping, throwing shot after shot at hordes of charging enemies without having to worry about reloading your weapon.
