Rui, a resilient city slicker, a half-educated jeweler and an author of articles on scientific magic, suffered a Great Failure and is now forced to return back to his homeland - Latori. Here, no one needs his articles, and the locals’ belief in omens and low-grade mysticism only causes Rui irritation. He dreams of returning to his past life, but is this possible when there is not a penny in his pocket? One day he gets lucky, a local baron orders a bracelet from him, a gift for his beautiful bride. Rui happily gets to work... But very soon he encounters a new problem - the Mad Rook, a legendary and mysterious spirit, interferes in the lives of local residents, causing crazy antics. They say that he appears among mortals only once a year, that he is strong, can cast magic, and also has a dark sense of humor. Rui has no choice - he decides to find out who this Mad Rook really is and deal with him.

Shan-La is an unusual place. Science goes hand in hand with mysticism here; The inhabitants of this world have access to electricity, telephones and radio, but they have never seen firearms or television. Their huge continent is surrounded by an endless ocean, and the stars in the sky are made of metal and hide many secrets and mysteries. Shan-La is inhabited by people and sahash. Sahash are anthropomorphic creatures, whose nationalities are easily distinguished from each other by the shape of their horns. Like people, each Sakhash people has its own culture, traditions and religion. And despite the complex relationships within Sakhash society, most of them get along well with people.
